How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Home in Central Texas?

StarPointe Homes • September 14, 2026

Most custom homes in Central Texas take roughly ten to sixteen months from your first planning conversation to the day you get your keys. That range is wide for a reason. The build itself is only one stretch of the timeline, and the phases that come before it are the ones that decide whether your schedule holds.

Here is how the time actually divides.

Planning: one to three months. We evaluate your land, study topography, soil conditions, access and orientation, then map how you actually want to live in the space. Compressing this phase is the most common reason a build runs long later.

Pre-construction: two to four months. Architectural plans get refined, finish and fixture selections are made, the site gets prepared, and your budget is built out line by line. Permitting happens here, and municipal review times across Bell, Coryell, Burnet, Lampasas and Williamson counties vary more than most first-time builders expect.

Construction: six to eleven months. Foundation, framing, mechanical systems, interior finishes, and multiple quality control inspections at every stage. This is where a clearly defined construction schedule earns its keep. This is also where incomplete work in the earlier phases will show up and derail the schedule.

Post-construction: 6 years. Home commissioning and warranty are extremely important on a custom home. There are some issues that can only be identified by living in the home, and those should be addressed immediately. Our structural warranty extends out to 6 years. Warranty support takes priority over all other components of our business.

What actually causes delays

Three things, almost every time. Late selections, because a decision postponed in month two becomes idle crew time in month nine. Mid-build change orders, which ripple outward through every trade on the calendar. And Central Texas weather, where a wet spring can push a foundation pour by weeks.

None of these are surprises. They are manageable when someone is watching the schedule every single week and telling you the truth about it.

Two habits that protect your schedule

Make your selections early and make them once. Every finish, fixture and appliance decision resolved before construction begins is a decision that cannot stall a crew later. And insist on a single point of contact who can answer a question the day you ask it. Builds slip when questions sit in an inbox for a week while framing waits on an answer.

Why we build a limited number of homes each year

Volume builders keep their timelines by keeping your choices narrow. We take a different route. By committing to a limited number of homes annually, we protect the attention your project gets, which means selections get resolved early, questions get answered the day you ask them, and problems get caught during inspection rather than after drywall.

An honest timeline is worth more than an optimistic one. If a builder quotes you a schedule without first seeing your land and understanding your selections, they are guessing.
